What is Ushering in the Arts?
Ushering in the Arts (UITA) is a volunteer program of the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, proudly supported by ConocoPhillips and First National Bank Alaska. Volunteer ushers help at every event at the Center, as well as at other non-profit performing arts events outside of the Center.
In 2016, our volunteers donated a whopping 21,587 hours!
Volunteer ushers represent a diverse cross-section of Anchorage. From teachers, to nurses, to community leaders, to engineers and hospitality and tourism workers, at nearly 300 volunteers strong, our volunteers represent what makes Anchorage so great. A third of our ushers have volunteered for over ten years, some now at the 30-year mark, and represent three generations of Alaskans.
While our volunteers come from different backgrounds and experiences, they all have one thing in common: they LOVE the arts! Ask an usher who’s been here awhile, and you will hear stories about the time the chandelier was stuck at Phantom of the Opera, or helping school kids look for “animals” in our famous poppy carpet, or leading the audience in singing holiday carols at Tuba Christmas. They have developed relationships with many of you who regularly attend performances, and love knowing they can help you have a dazzling experience when you enter our doors.

Ushering Services Outside the PAC
Trained volunteer ushers are available to non-profit performance organizations outside of the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, as availability allows. The goal of the program and our ushers is to make each patron’s theatre experience welcoming and safe.
These services are available for a small fee, based on location per performance. If you are interested in utilizing this service, please review and complete the Ushering in the Arts Agreement below and return to Volunteer Services Manager Melissa Weckhorst.
