88 Keys Campaign

Goal: To purchase the first ever 9-foot Steinway grand piano that will make its permanent home in the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts.

How do I claim my key?

You may select your key on a first-come, first-served basis at whatever level you feel appropriate. You will be recognized in a permanent installation to be hung inside ACPA, Inc. There are only 88 keys. Once all the keys are claimed, the campaign is over.

Case for Support:

The Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, Inc. (ACPA) is a community jewel in downtown Anchorage, Alaska, owned by the Municipality of Anchorage, and managed by ACPA, Inc. When it first opened, Yamaha Pianos generously loaned ACPA, Inc. a 9-foot grand piano that graced many performances at the Center for over twenty-eight years. ACPA, Inc. was honored to care for this beautiful instrument until the Yamaha loan program ended in 2015.

Every year over 250,000 visitors come to watch live arts at the Center, and we are home to ten resident companies. There is no question that we need to replace the piano, and that we need the finest instrument available to continue to attract premiere artists. After careful consideration, the decision was made to purchase a 9-foot Steinway grand piano.

What will that Cost?

Purchase Price: $160,000

A new 9-foot Steinway grand piano, Model D, costs approximately $160,000. This purchase price includes the piano and bench, shipping via air freight, and two round-trip tickets for Dr. Tim Smith, Associate Dean of the Performing Arts at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, and our President, Nancy Harbour, to travel to the Steinway factory in New York and choose a piano in their Selection Room.

Ongoing Costs: $40,000 +

Pianos require ongoing maintenance (tuning, re-felting the hammers, fixing the action on keys, etc). They also need to be stored securely in a climate-controlled environment. Additional funds raised beyond the purchase price will be used for these purposes.

What is the 88 Keys Campaign?

There are eighty-eight keys on a grand piano. These eighty-eight keys have been assigned a sponsorship value.

  • Opus $25K+ (4 keys)
  • Concerto $10K – $25K (4 keys)
  • Sonata $5K-$10K (8 keys)
  • Nocturne $1K-$5K (16 keys)
  • Prelude $500 - $1K (56 keys)

Jo A. Michalski $100

Eleanor Andrews $50
Sarah Williams $50

How much has been raised to date?

Thanks to a kick-off donation of $30,000 from the Atwood Foundation and our loyal donors, we have already exceeded 50% of our goal of $200,000.

What do I receive for my donation?

This will be an asset for the community and it is only fitting that our community have the opportunity to be part of its purchase. You will have the pride of knowing you were part of elevating piano performances at the Center.

Additionally, as a donor to the 88 Key Campaign you will be eligible for:

A trip of a lifetime - Steinway Factory Tour and Autumn in New York City!

Each key is assigned one (1) raffle ticket. One ticket will be selected at random (with two tickets selected as runners up - in the event the winner is unable to attend). The raffle will occur at the showing of the PBS documentary Note by Note, Sunday, September 18, 2 PM at the Sydney Laurence Theatre. The winner of the raffle will receive two (2) round-trip coach tickets to New York City, hotel accommodations, and a per diem to cover local travel and food and be invited to accompany Dr. Tim Smith and President Nancy Harbour to tour the Steinway factory and be there when the piano is selected. In the event that a student (17 and under) is selected as the raffle winner, the minor must be accompanied by an adult to attend. The trip will be October 10 – 13, 2016.

(Terms and conditions apply. There are no substitutions for alternative dates.)
Value: approximately $5,000

May I claim more than one key?

You may select a key for individual members of your family or friends. For example, you may purchase three keys at $1K level for $3K. You may select 4 keys at $500 level for $2000 for four of your children, sisters, friends, or in honor of someone. One key = one raffle ticket, regardless of the value placed on the key. Your chances of winning will be 1:88. Corporate sponsors and foundations may donate their raffle ticket to an employee or individual of their choosing.

Can I give at a lower level than $500?

Absolutely. To be eligible for the 88 Key Campaign you may pool resources with members of your family, a group of friends, a Rotary club, or book club and claim one of the 88 keys. We will leave it to you to sort out who gets the trip, should you win.

Alternatively, you may contribute any amount from $1 to $499 at the Grace Note level and be recognized on the installation for helping bring the piano to ACPA, Inc.
