The Alaska Native Heritage Center (ANHC) is a living cultural center located in Anchorage, Alaska that promotes active observance of Alaska Native culture and traditions. As the only statewide cultural and education center dedicated to celebrating all cultures and heritages, ANHC serves as a statewide resource for Alaska Natives from birth until Elder, and we support and celebrate Alaska Natives from all of Alaska’s Native cultures, including Inupiaq, St. Lawrence Island Yupik, Athabascan, Eyak, Haida, Tsimshian, Tlingit, Unangax, Alutiiq, Yup’ik, and Cup’ik.

Through permanent collections, life-sized village sites, and immersive educational programs, ANHC works to provide tourists and non-Natives a framework in which to engage with Alaska Native culture. We understand that we are uniquely positioned to create meaningful engagement, authentic exhibits, and dynamic materials that generate compassion for and understanding of our people’s lived experiences.

Paul JacksPaul Jacks
Saturday, July 24, 2021 at 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm — Town Square Park, Alaska Center for the Performing Arts
Presented by Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, Anchorage Museum, AKIMI & Anchorage Downtown Partnership

The city of Anchorage is located at the terminus of the Cook Inlet in the south–central portion of Alaska. With its long, brutal winters and close proximity to active volcanoes, the city is as beautiful as it dangerous. Here is where we find the iconoclastic indie–pop auteur Paul Jacks. Over the past decade and a half, the Alaskan singer/songwriter/producer/multi–instrumentalist has quietly built a compelling catalogue of recordings that showcase a distinctive lyrical vision and a one–of–a–kind sonic sensibility. Frontman and songwriter for Alaskan indie pop collective Smile Ease, Jacks decided to go solo in 2018 with his release of Defractor, which launched on the same day as the major Anchorage earthquake. This was followed up in 2019, with In Other Words and then Drama Club, a B–side EP from the In Other Words sessions. In 2019, he decided to start releasing singles to run them in parallel with his album career. In 2020, Jacks released 4 dual singles, or A/B singles, as well as his third solo album Black Jackal. Jacks has started 2021 with a musical bang working with producer Alex Newport, and having already released 3 dual singles in the year while working on recording his 4th full length solo album, and is now performing live with his full band including previous Asteroid keyboardist Colton Ciufo, guitarist Jason Searle, Drummer Joe Smith, and bassist Franz Schmidt, playing an exciting and diverse set of songs spanning his entire solo catalog.
